Music: Inner

The city speaks in many ways and one of those ways is music. Our tour guide Milton explained that music goes way back into the slave days of New Orleans. Slaves had one day off a week, which was Sunday. After church they were free to do what they wanted for the rest of the day. Most congregated in Congo Square to have a sort of party you could compare it to. The type of music that played at Congo Square involved lots of drums, which Milton gave us a taste of during our tour. He showed us how people have made some adaptations of this music called bamboula. Next the most widely known music to the city is jazz. Jazz music was born in New Orleans and then spread to the rest of the country. The city is still thriving in jazz music culture. It was once the risky type of music women didn't wasn't their children listening too. Now, it is a culture of the city you will hear jazz music on every corner in the French quarter. It is amazing how many people are just amazing musically, like our tour guides cousin. We made a stop to listen to her and she was amazing on the clarinet and had great vocals. Jazz music has stayed in the city for decades and it won’t be leaving any time soon. It is one of the things that makes New Orleans so different from other cities in the United States. It truly has its own one of a kind cultures that stays true to its roots.
