This day was one of my favorite days. We visited two beautiful churches and got a tour of the pharmacy museum, which was by far my favorite tour this trip. Besides the amazing tour guide the pharmacy museum was full of so much history and being a nursing major it was so fascinating. The old dusty bottles filled with a wide variety of weird ingredients. There were bottles of the so called “medicine” that were dated from the nineteenth century. The different color glass bottles had indication of some drugs we see as street drugs today. Drugs like heroin and cocaine. It’s really crazy to think that these were normal prescriptions for people to take quite often. Another really interesting material we saw was more of a beauty product it was a jar full of dead butterflies. It was very old which was noticeable by the large glass jar and all of the dust. With a closer look at the butterflies had a really blue shine to them. When the light hit it just right you could really see the color shimmer. Women would use the butterflies for their faces to have the appearance of looking sickly, because it was fashionable to have tuberculosis. I think it is so crazy to imagine women making themselves look sick until they are actually sick. I can imagine the women all looking blue in the face due to lack of oxygen and yet it’s was considered fashion for them at this time.
